Community Involvement.Community involvement is important for gifted education because is connects the real world with the school. Often gifted students are locked into academia, but they can strongly benefit from service projects in the greater community. Given the opportunity to problem-solve, students develop a sense of belonging outside of high school.
Enrichment Opportunities.Enrichment programs give gifted and talented students the opportunity to explore opportunities and networking beyond their own schools. Sometimes, this is a student’s first opportunity to grow outside of their own community. This is a steppingstone for transformative global citizenship and social awareness. Leadership Development. It is important to nurture innate gifts and talents if we want our gifted students to become future leaders. All of our students have unique skills and we need to guide them and show them how they can use their gifts in leadership roles. While great leaders have similar characteristics, leaders can look very different. If teachers practice modeling leadership in their classroom, they can expose students to various leadership styles and help develop skills among students in their own schools and community. When students are part of decision- making within their school, it creates a sense of ownership and strengthens a school tremendously. This also encourages students to invest in their community, even past being a student. Students will want to come back to the community that raised and empowered them.
Building Relationships.Students will put greater effort into learning and growing as individuals when they feel that their teacher and parents have invested in them. It works in two ways, they feel safe, knowing that their teacher and parents support them and will catch them if they fall. On the other hand, they want them to be proud of them and to not let them down.
