Physical Environment.
The physical classroom actually deeply impacts the learning of your gifted student. For example, the environment dictates how teachers can group students, how they can move around the room, the resources available to them, and more. Teachers are now spending more time than ever before ensuring that the physical space meets the academic, as well as social and emotional needs of your child.
Sample Ideal Learning Environment. |
Ever wonder what teachers wish their classrooms could look like? Below a teacher describes their ideal classroom
|
"Currently, my classroom contains traditional desk seating. While my desks are grouped in pairs to encourage some level of communication, I’d love to build upon that with more flexible seating options. For example, I’d incorporate traditional desks, standup desks, a few tables and even a beanbag corner. Additionally, all the walls will be made of floor to ceiling whiteboards or windows, encouraging students to write on the walls! Research shows students are more engaged with choice seating because they can take care of physical needs before intellectual ones. Additionally, I’d like to have moveable smart boards in each corner, which would function in two major ways. First, they can simultaneously connect to my laptop and cast from my iPad. This allows me to present new notes, so students facing any direction in the class could see my instruction. The second functionality would allow students to connect their own devices. This would give students the chance to develop leadership skills in my classroom. Leadership opportunities are crucial for growth in gifted and advanced learners. It fosters critical thinking and decision-making skills and gives students ownership of their learning. There would be outlets in or near all furniture. Students wouldn’t be limited to their choice of seating by dying technology. This would cut down on learning disruptions. Lastly, a covered outdoor space would create an opportunity for indoor/outdoor learning. " - High School Math Teacher
